We will be holding public Tree Planting every Saturday morning from 12th - 26th March. Each of the 3 Saturdays will be themed on a different topic.
12th March 2022 – Tree Planting: Hedging
Hedging is a quickly disappearing habitat that used to thread around Ireland keeping our woodland species alive. The species that live in hedges can typically be found in the woodland edge, where light still penetrates. A non-intensively maintained hedge will support an abundance of bird and insect life.
19th March 2022 – Tree Planting: Woodland
Woodlands are a disappearing habitat around our home that used to be covered in forest. Our forests gave our ancestors the food, timber, and medicines they needed. Also, from our woods came many of our Gods and stories that inspired both faith and fear.
26th March 2022 – Tree Planting: Coppicing
Coppicing is the practice of cutting a tree at its base and allowing it to regrow. The regrown parts are eventually cut again after a few years which provides us with a sustainable method of timber production and prolongs the life of the tree. Such trees include alder, hazel, willow, and oak.
Time: 10am to 11.30am.
Dates: 12th, 19th & 26th March 2022
If you can, please bring along your own shovel or spade! Please remember to wear extra layers, rain gear, and wellies!
